🎥 Ghost in the Shell (1995)

completed, July. Watched the subbed version, as the dub put me off GITS entirely when I watched it maybe 15 years ago. Incredibly sick aesthetically, beautiful music. It obviously makes a great companion piece to the new anime, which I've started and am enjoying a lot. Very cool to have two very different (and excellent) takes on the same source material.

completed, July. This was incalculably better than I expected. It's a sad dad movie, but I think that's a less saturated genre in 2026 than it was in 2023, and it's really well executed. Fun premise, solid acting, very sick sci-fi gun design, FX, and sound work. Enjoyed the flavour of dinosaurs and their animation especially. Wow!

🎥 Strange Days

completed, July. Instantly one of my favourite movies ever. Very hard to think of much that looks and sounds so good. Ralph Fiennes and Angela Bassett are both stupidly hot in it.

🎥 Pandorum

completed, July. Another Austin pick, this one actually blew me away. Insanely ambitious, felt enormous in scope. Amazing set and sound design, and I genuinely never could tell what was coming next. Will need to let it sit but I think this is really up in my favourite sci-fi movies.

🎥 From Beyond

completed, May. Didn't expect this to be good, but Austin does it again. Some wild performances, fun (if one-dimensional) characters, and really great fx work. Made in the 80s when bisexuality was the scariest thing imaginable.

🎥 Tank Girl

completed, June. Austin pick. Absolute banger, can feel the influence on so much stuff since (most of which unfortunately misses the mark), and it's just a really fun and high energy movie.

🎥 The Sheep Detectives

completed, May. Watched this with my mother, and I think we both really enjoyed it. Solid, silly movie. The most notable thing, apart from the general charmingness, is the CG for the sheep was really really good - completely undistracting at all times.

🎥 The Martian

rewatch, Mar. I'd forgotten almost every detail, so it was great to revisit this and compare it with Project Hail Mary. It's more serious and down-to-earth (in a manner of speaking), but interestingly I found the actual themes to feel quite a bit lighter. It's a great counterpart and I'd recommend watching both to compare!

🎥 Sinners

completed, Mar. Shockingly good music, likeable characters, dozens of great moments. Horror-themed, rather than horror, in my opinion, but to it's great credit. Great looking movie, tonnes of fun to watch.

🎥 The Texas Chainsaw Massacre

completed, Mar. The 2003 remake. Remarkably serviceable, at least when taking it on its own terms.

🎥 One Battle After Another

rewatch, Mar. Watched it again with my parents, and unsurprisingly it still rocks.

🎥 Project Hail Mary

completed, Mar. Overall this was a really fun film, really did a great job maintaining the emotional intensity while still being really frequently funny. I think it really benefited from taking itself seriously, it never undermined the premise.
