Linux 2

Before I transitioned to Arch on my desktop, for about a year I was running Manjaro on a clapped out Microsoft Surface 1.

I think I was trying different distros and Manjaro just worked nicely out of the box, so I stuck with it. I avoided most Manjaro-isms, no pamac, just used pacman directly. It was basically used as a Firefox box, with some occasional very light programming or gaming.

Having now transitioned to Arch on the desktop, and being in a position where I'm likely to want to use the laptop for more than watching videos in bed, I decided to reinstall something else, and completely knock out the Windows partition while I was at it.

Currently, I'm planning to run:

  • Arch
  • linux-surface kernel
  • Niri
  • Eww
  • Vicinae

I want to take the opportunity to try a tiling style window manager, and hopefully end up with something a bit more lightweight in the process. I've done some experiments with Niri and the CachyOS config already, and it looks good, with nice touchpad support.

I'm considering if I want to setup snapper, but in practice I don't expect to have any real data that's both important and not in version control. So I might keep it simple with just systemd-boot instead of creating unnecessary headaches for myself.

I'll update this post when I get around to the reinstall.
